Hood Canal
Construction is nearly complete on this Hood Canal retreat. The house occupies an angled terrace of land that faces both south down the canal and west toward the Olympic Mountain Range. The house and landscape are organized around a series of parallel board-formed concrete walls that retain earth, create indoor and outdoor spaces, and organize movement through and between. Boards for the concrete were milled from a house constructed on the site in the 1950s by trees originally from the property. Salvage timbers for the principal structural members. The roof is sod to minimize the visual impact of the house, control the release of storm water, and moderate temperatures year-round. The heat system will use a geothermal heat loop to reduce demand for fuel and electricity. The project also includes two small guest houses and a boathouse.. |
